In 2011 ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) announced a program to the liberalization of the top-level domain market.
The goal of the New generic Top-Level Domain Program is to increase the competition, innovation and consumer choice in the addressing system of the Internet.
In the first half of 2012 ICANN accepted applications from large Organizations wanting to use new domain extensions.
ICANN has received more than 1900 applications for new top level domains.
The first New Gtld will be released on the 23rd of April in 2013. The first New domains could go live for the general public in autumn 2013.
